How to migrate from Category Group for Answers

Most orgs have already migrated. The remaining work is for orgs that still carry legacy Answers data or documentation that references the old surface.

Most orgs have already migrated. The remaining work is for orgs that still carry legacy Answers data or documentation that references the old surface.

  1. Inventory legacy Answers data

Query Question and Reply objects to see how much historical data exists. The data remains queryable even though the UI is retired.

  2. Migrate Category Groups to Knowledge Data Categories

Recreate the Category Group structure as Knowledge Data Categories. The configuration screens are similar; the same tree model applies.

  3. Replace community Q&A with Chatter Questions

Enable Chatter Questions and Experience Cloud Q&A components. Plan for the flatter Topic model rather than the hierarchical category model.

  4. Rebuild reports

Reports on legacy Question and Reply with Category Group filters do not work. Rebuild against Feed Item objects with Topic filters.

  5. Update documentation

Any internal documentation referencing Category Group for Answers should translate to Data Category Groups for Knowledge and Topics for Q&A.

Gotchas
  • Category Group for Answers is retired in new orgs. Documentation that references it is by definition historical.
  • Chatter Questions use flat Topics, not hierarchical categories. Migration loses some taxonomy depth; plan for it.
  • Legacy Answers reports do not work on Chatter Questions. Rebuild reports on Feed Item objects.
  • Data Category Visibility settings carry across Knowledge but not to modern Q&A Topics. Topic visibility is a separate configuration.
