Salesforce certifications validate skills; they're widely recognised and part of consulting credibility.
Certification tracks:
Admin track:
- Admin (entry) — every Salesforce professional should have this.
- Advanced Admin — deeper config, security, automation.
- Platform App Builder — declarative dev (objects, fields, automation).
Consulting track:
- Sales Cloud Consultant — Sales Cloud expertise.
- Service Cloud Consultant — Service Cloud expertise.
- Field Service Consultant — Field Service.
- Experience Cloud Consultant — Communities/Experience Cloud.
- Industry-specific — Financial Services, Health, Education, etc.
Developer track:
- Platform Developer I (PD1) — entry-level Apex/Visualforce.
- Platform Developer II (PD2) — advanced Apex, integration.
- JavaScript Developer I — LWC focus.
Architect track:
- Sharing & Visibility, Data Architecture, Integration Architecture, Identity & Access Management, Development Lifecycle & Deployment, B2C Solution Architect, etc.
- Pinnacle: Certified Technical Architect (CTA) — board-reviewed, hardest cert in the ecosystem.
Other:
- Marketing Cloud Email Specialist, Account Engagement (Pardot) Specialist, CRM Analytics Consultant.
Advice for teams:
- Admin first for everyone touching Salesforce, including developers and consultants.
- PD1 for developers within the first year.
- Sales Cloud / Service Cloud Consultant for consultants specialising in those clouds.
- Architect domain certs for senior practitioners; CTA for those committed to the architect track.
- Don't certify for the sake of it — pick certs aligned to actual work and career goals.
Maintenance:
- Salesforce releases 3 times per year; consultants must complete release exams to maintain certs.
- Trailhead's Trailmix system tracks release training.
Senior consultant view:
- Certs help in the early career — get hired, signal expertise.
- Mid-career: certs become tabletop stakes; experience matters more.
- Senior: portfolio of past projects matters far more than certs. CTA stands out.
Certs don't replace experience but accelerate confidence and access. A consultant with 0 certs but 10 years of complex deliveries beats one with 5 certs and 1 year.
