OWD
Organization-Wide Defaults
The baseline level of record access granted to all users in a Salesforce org for each object. OWDs can be set to Private, Public Read Only, Public Read/Write, or Controlled by Parent.
Example use case
An admin sets the OWD for Opportunities to Private so that sales reps can only see their own deals, then uses sharing rules to grant additional access to managers.
