The Certified Technical Architect (CTA) is the pinnacle of Salesforce architecture certifications. The CTA review board evaluates across domains:
- Communities/Mobile — Experience Cloud architecture, mobile design.
- Data — data model, large data volume strategies, data lifecycle.
- Development Lifecycle & Deployment — sandboxes, DX, CI/CD, release management.
- Integration — APIs, middleware, integration patterns, event-driven architecture.
- Identity & Access Management — authentication, SSO, OAuth, identity provider integration.
- Sharing & Visibility — OWD, role hierarchy, sharing rules, Apex managed sharing.
Each domain has its own architect-level certification (e.g., Data Architect, Integration Architect) — passing all six is the path toward the Application Architect + System Architect combo, which combined with hands-on review boards yields the CTA.
The CTA review:
- Live board review: present a full multi-cloud architecture for a fictional client.
- 3 hours of presentation + Q&A.
- Pass rate is famously low (~10-15% per attempt).
Why it matters: CTA signifies the deepest expertise on the platform. Roles at $300K+ in major markets. Strategic advisor to CIOs.
Path takes years. Many architects pursue it; few complete it. Even attempting the journey deepens architectural maturity significantly.
