Definition

Package Usage is a Setup page that displays license usage and allocation information for all installed managed packages in the org. It shows how many licenses are available, how many are assigned, and which users have been granted access to each package.

Real-World Example

The admin at Velocity Partners opens Package Usage and discovers that the DocuSign package has 25 licenses available but only 18 assigned. Meanwhile, the Conga Composer package has all 30 licenses assigned and 5 users requesting access. She reassigns unused DocuSign licenses and requests additional Conga licenses from the vendor.

Why Package Usage Matters

Package Usage is a Setup page in Salesforce that displays license allocation and consumption data for all installed managed packages in the org. For each package, it shows the total number of licenses purchased, how many have been assigned to users, and how many remain unassigned. This centralized view is essential for administrators who need to manage software costs, ensure users have access to the tools they need, and plan license procurement before allocations run out.

As organizations install more managed packages over time, license management becomes a significant operational and financial concern. Without regular review of the Package Usage page, orgs often pay for licenses that sit unused while simultaneously denying access to users who need them. The page is also critical during employee onboarding and offboarding, as admins must assign new users the appropriate package licenses and reclaim licenses from departing employees. Organizations that automate license auditing using the Package Usage page data can optimize their software spend and avoid surprise renewal costs.

How Organizations Use Package Usage

  • Velocity Partners — Velocity Partners' admin reviews Package Usage monthly and discovers that DocuSign has 7 unused licenses while 5 users are requesting access. She reassigns the unused licenses immediately and avoids purchasing additional ones, saving $4,200 annually.
  • Crestline Financial — Crestline Financial uses Package Usage data during annual budget planning. The admin exports license counts for all 8 managed packages, calculates per-user costs, and presents a renewal optimization plan that reduces package spending by 15% by eliminating licenses for users who never log in.
  • Harbor Health Systems — Harbor Health Systems configures a monthly automated report that compares Package Usage license assignments against user login activity. Licenses assigned to users who have not logged in for 90 days are flagged for reclamation and reassignment.
