Definition
Custom View is an administrator- or developer-created component in Salesforce that extends the platform beyond its default capabilities. It provides the flexibility to model unique business data, enforce specialized logic, or build custom user interfaces.
Real-World Example
When the system admin at BrightEdge Solutions needs to streamline operations, they turn to Custom View to control how users interact with Salesforce data and features. After configuring Custom View in the sandbox and validating it with key stakeholders, they roll it out to production. User adoption improves because the interface now matches how teams actually work.
Why Custom View Matters
Custom Views — commonly known as List Views — allow users and administrators to create filtered, sorted displays of records for any object in Salesforce. Each Custom View defines which records appear (based on filter criteria), which columns are displayed, and how results are sorted. They are accessible from the object's tab or list page and can be scoped to show "My Records," "My Team's Records," or "All Records" depending on the sharing model. Unlike reports, Custom Views provide a lightweight, real-time way to browse and act on records directly from the list interface.
As organizations add more users and data, well-designed Custom Views become essential for productivity. Sales reps need a view of their open Opportunities closing this month, support agents need a view of high-priority Cases assigned to their queue, and managers need team-wide views for pipeline reviews. Without curated views, users waste time scrolling through irrelevant records or building reports for simple lookups. Administrators should create shared views for common use cases and teach users to build personal views for their individual workflows. In Lightning Experience, List Views also power Kanban boards and inline editing, making them even more versatile.
How Organizations Use Custom View
- Silverline Realty — Silverline Realty's sales manager created a shared Custom View called "Hot Deals This Quarter" that filters Opportunities by Close Date within the current quarter, Stage equals Negotiation or Proposal, and Amount greater than $100,000. The entire sales team uses this view during weekly pipeline meetings, and the Kanban display lets them drag deals between stages in real time.
- Brightpath Education — Brightpath Education's support team created Custom Views for each support tier: "Tier 1 — New Cases" shows unassigned cases under 24 hours old, "Tier 2 — Escalated" shows cases with escalation flags, and "Tier 3 — Engineering" shows cases linked to bugs. Each agent's homepage displays their tier's view, reducing case discovery time from 5 minutes to under 30 seconds.
- Vanguard Logistics — Vanguard Logistics built a Custom View on their custom Shipment object that filters for shipments with a status of "Delayed" and sorts by the estimated delivery date. Operations managers check this view at 8 AM daily and immediately contact carriers for the most overdue shipments. The view includes columns for carrier name, tracking number, and customer contact, giving managers everything they need in one glance.
